Cusano 59 – A Rare Cameroon Wrapper
I can’t remember how many years ago it was, but I was in a Two Guys Cigar Shop in New Hampshire shortly after they had opened. I had framed a number of prints for their new shop and was talking to the owner, David. A gentleman came in and I was introduced to Mike Cusano. At that time he had just started making cigars and I got a ‘Bullet’ which was quite flavorful. Fast forward several years, Cusano has sold out to Davidoff and I find another good cigar in the humidor.
Upon first inspection our cigar looks nice. It has a nice medium brown color and a toothy feel. It has a faint hint of cedar aroma and definitely an earthy smell. It punches easily and lights without a problem. The first draws produce a little smoke and a thin astringent flavor, but that quickly burns out.
The cigar burns evenly and holds a nice long gray ash. After a short while the volume of smoke picks up.
Once past the initial burn, the flavor settles into a medium bodied peppery taste. There are hints of sweetness that I think come form the rare Cameroon wrapper. Moving to the second third of the cigar, I don’t really taste a difference but, as the cigar enters the home stretch, both the pepper and the sweetness, a slight cherry, I think get stronger.
At under $6.00 this is a good value. It’s a pleasant well made cigar that has an interesting taste profile with the combination of strong and sweet. I can see this being a nice addition to any humidor.
