Felipe Gregorio Refusion – A Secret Shared

Felipe Gregorio RefusionAs you all know, I’ve been smoking cigars for well over 40 years.  And, I’ve found the people in that I’ve met through cigars to be friendly, helpful, and nice.  The crew at Felipe Gregorio are no exception.  Except when it comes to telling us about the blend of the Refusion.  Both on their website, and in their literature they say ‘Belnd:  House Secret’.  We know its tobacco and we know its good.

Back in 1995 they came out with a small single batch limited cigar called fusion.  The tobaccos from that cigar were aged together for three years in cedar trunks.  Hence, the name fusion. Long after they were sold out people kept asking for that blend.  Finally, Gregorio found the necessary tobacco to remake this blend.  And, the name Re-Fusion.  And, that’s as close to the secret as they are willing to share.

This cigar has a nice light wrapper.  It clipped easily and the cold draw was nice.  It seemed open and full of flavor.  It lit without problem.  Unlike many cigars today, the packaging is simple.  There is a nice band in a cedar dived box that houses 20 sticks.  Simple, and nice.

The cigar that I was smoking was a larger ring and while it held a nice grey ash, it did not burn very evenly.  I fiddled with the end, relighting to try to even it out, but struggled.  This was slightly disappointing becasue it detracted from the overall experience.  But fortunately, didn’t hurt the flavor.

This is a full bodied smoke.  I thought it was heavy with a woodsy, mushroomy taste at first.  While there was some spice initially, it was not predominant in the first part of the cigar.  As I moved through to the second third, the flavors became more complex.  The spice and a nuttiness moved to the front.  The spice reminded em of a nutmeg and mace flavor.  Sharp, but not peppery.  As the cigar continued, the spice intensified.  To the end, it was tempered by the woods and hay taste.  A complex, full bodied cigar.

At $15 this isn’t an inexpensive cigar.  But for your money you get a lot of smoke.  It’s a bid stick with big flavors.  If you have a big meal and want to relax with a nice cognac and a long, complex, full cigar this will be the ticket.
