Buena Vista An Affordable Smoke
It’s hard to decide what to smoke at this time of year. With the industries biggest show just a few weeks ago there are lots of new things out in the marketplace. Today’s review is of an interesting new cigar from a little known company, Buena Vista Cigars. At this point the company, with a farm in Ecuador, is relatively small and unknown. But they have made a commitment to a great cigar. The tobacco is all Cuban seed and grown and rolled under the supervision of Cuban cigar makers.
When you first look at the cigar you will notice in the box a signed small note from the roller. It states something about the roller and that he or she has personally made each of the cigars in your box to his own exacting standards. It’s a nice touch and sets you in the mood to enjoy a good smoke. The cigar itself is adorned with tow bands, the traditional band and a foot band as well. The band identified my cigar as being a Reserva, meaning that it has Dominican tobacco as well as the Ecuadoran. The cigar clipped easily and lit without problem.
The cigar burned well, evenly and held a nice ash. I thought the ash would stay for a while but it fell just as i was bragging about it. Still it was almost 2 inches long. The cigars felt a little soft so I was concerned that they might not draw well, but they proved to be very nicely constructed with a perfect draw.
The flavor in my smoke was mild. I think if this smoke as a ‘breakfast’ cigar. It was flavorful, but not strong. At first it starts out with a nice creaminess. There are hints of toasted nuts in the background. As the cigar progresses, the nutty flavor becomes slightly stronger but it is still creamy. As I cam to the final third of the cigar the cream seemed lace with espresso. It was an altogether nice smoke. I’d would definitely enjoy another one of these as a morning smoke.
One of the nice things about this cigar is that it is available in a large number of shapes, mostly all with a wide ring gauge. From a 5 1/8 x 46 to a 6 1/2 x 54 there is a lot to chose from. And they make two different blends. The one we tasted today as well as an Ecuadoran puro.
At around $6 per stick it’s not the cheapest smoke but it is a nice cigar. It’s hard to find mild cigars that have more than one dimension int he flavor and this cigar provides a nice interesting and complex flavor profile at a reasonable price.
