An “Aged” Cigar from Blue Mountain
Marvin Wright’s Blue Mountain Cigars has several brands and he has continuously introduced new blends since he began in 1995. At the 2014 IPCPR Marvin provided me with a Black Anejo to test. This cigar is made in Esteli, Nicaragua with Nicaraguan filler and binder, wrapped in a Habano criollo tobacco.
The Black Anejo is a 7 X 54 toro grande whose long black band is unusual but it does protect the cigar. The band was easy to remove and the cigar was more milk chocolate in color than dark chocolate. The cap has a pig tail and there was a small hard spot near the cap. The draw and smoke volume were about average. The flavor profile started with strong spice but about midway included coffee and vanilla. The aftertaste was a heavy pepper. The strength was just about full bodied.
The ash for the Black Anejo was well formed. The cigar took an hour to smoke and was well constructed. The SRP is $10.60 each ($212 for a box of 20), in keeping with Blue Mountain’s approach to the premium market segment and I rate it a 3.5 out of 5.
