Don Lucas Issues a 20th Anniversary Cigar
Twenty years is long enough to establish a track record of success and at the 2014 IPCPR Don Lucas issued a cigar to commemorate its 20th anniversary in the industry. Not surprisingly, it is called the 20th Anniversary, is a limited production cigar and they gave me a 5 ¾ X 54 toro to review.
The 20th Anniversary is a Dominican puro with a nice, dark wrapper. It was slightly veiny but not enough to detract from its overall appearance. The cap was quite hard to the touch and this may be the cause for the slightly tight draw. The initial flavor was of spice and leather and later the spice was replaced by pepper. There was an under taste of nuts that was pleasant. The flavored varied only in intensity, not complexity. The smoke was creamy in texture and good in volume. The ash was a well formed grey and the burn was even for the entire smoke. Aside from the hard cap, the construction was very good.
It took an hour and 30 minutes to smoke this medium bodied cigar and I gave it above average marks in appearance, construction and flavor – I liked the cigar. However, the SRP (if you buy a whole box full) is $14 each. One cause for this price is the box is also a humidor. Still, I feel this is too high and drop the overall score to 3 out of 5.
