Battleground Cigars Presidential Offering – the Lincoln
Battleground Cigars is a boutique cigar operation based in Connecticut. When we think of cigars and Connecticut, the very popular shade tobacco immediately comes to mind. Combining battleground and Connecticut brings forth the revolutionary war, yet Battleground Cigars is focused upon the Civil War because one of its prominent citizens and businesses played an important role in that war. Battleground does not play blue or grey favorites as many their cigars are named after officers from both sides. One exception is the Lincoln which they offered us at the 2014 IPCPR.
The Lincoln comes as bourbon infused or non-infused. As our sample was not in a sealed container and we had it in our humidor for 9 months, we assume it was not infused. Unfortunately the Battleground website does not have any blend information but the Lincoln is reportedly aged in oak bourbon barrels to impart some spice and sweetness. According to our cigar sizer, this Lincoln was 5.5 X 54 and had a dark mottled brown wrapper, perhaps a maduro. The draw was a little tight but not overly so. The initial flavor was oak and pepper that was joined by cocoa and spice. The smoke volume was average, the ash was well formed and the burn was very even, suggesting good construction.
It took an hour to smoke the medium bodied Lincoln and at less than $7, which we could not verify, the cigar is worth it. We give the Lincoln a 3.5 out of 5.
