La Aurora 107 – Worth Smoking Again

La Aurora 107 RobustoLet’s start by saying this is a really good cigar.  For years I had always thought of La Aurora as a boutique shop making mostly expensive cigars.  I never really considered them for my humidor because I thought they were out of my reach.  I knew they were nice cigars and enjoyed them whenever I was lucky enough to find one in an event bag.  But, my experience over the last year in writing this blog has been eye popping.  I thought I knew a lot about cigars.  I learned that I knew very little.  Slowly, I am learning the right questions to ask.  But, more importantly, I am, hopefully, sharing my ignorance with you.  This should open your mind to things that you might not have otherwise thought about.

When I first look at the La Aurora 107, I notice the veiny oily wrapper.  It says that there is goodness inside.  The band on the cigar is also noticeable.  La Aurora and its sister brands have some larger and more elaborate bands, with the 107 perhaps being the most modest.  The cigar clipped and lit without problem.  I thought the pre-light aroma was woodsy and the after light continued in that same smell.

The cigar is well constructed.  It held a nice ash and a tight edge.  For a short smoke, I sometimes feel that I can hold a single ash and this stick came close.  The draw is open and easy with the cigar producing lots of nice smoke.

Flavors were complex.  It started out sweet with hints of apple or maybe cherry and got more spicy and heavier as the cigar progressed.  AT the mid point I thought I was having a piece of pie with the apple fading to a cinnamon taste and finally turning more to a sharper finish.  I would rate this a ‘lunch’ cigar or a medium to slightly full bodied smoke.

Perhaps the most important thing that I had wrong about La Aurora was their affordability.  I felt that this was an expensive cigar that was beyond my everyday smoking budget.  But at less than $7.00 per cigar it’s not overpriced at all.  The lesson for me was just because a cigar is getting lots of hype or has a certain rep, you should still check it out for yourself.  Or better yet, read CigarMayven.com for the straight scoop.

La Aurora has recently announced a line extension promising the 107 in a new shape sometime soon.  I can’t wait.
