A Threesome on a Blue Mountain?
Blue Mountian Cigars, Marvin Wright’s Nicaraguan cigar company, sells a stick that looks like 3 different cigars cut into thirds with the cap part of the maduro cigar attached to the middle of a Habano cigar and the foot is from a Connecticut wrapped cigar. Hence the name El Threesome – for 3 wrappers around 3 blends, all separate but in the same cigar. Unusual approach and unusual appearance for an unusual cigar. Marvin gave me the 6 X 60 El Threesome at the 2014 IPCPR to review.
The Threesome was firm with few slight bumps at the cap. I would like to see how this cigar is rolled and glued. The first third is the Connecticut wrapper around a Honduran filler and Nicaraguan binder. The predominant flavor was spice with an undertone of sweetness and this did not change until the second third – the Ecuadorian Habano wrapped around the Nicaraguan and Honduran tobaccos. This portion was stronger than the first third and had the flavor of leather and earth. The sweetness undertone continued. The final third, maduro, was actually the strongest and was nutty in flavor. The ash and smoke volume were at acceptable levels but the draw was a little difficult and detracted from the overall experience.
I consider the El Threesome to be medium to full bodied with three separate flavor profiles. It took an hour and 20 minutes to smoke and is certainly an attention getting cigar. The SRP is about $7.75 but this drops to $6 if you buy a bundle of 25 which is a decent level considering the cigar’s uniqueness. I rate the El Threesome a 3.5 out of 5.
