Asylum 2012
Everything in the cigar industry is interwoven. Every one knows and has worked with everyone else. If you think about it, this is not really surprising when you consider that this is primarily a small business where parents teach children and skills are easily transferred regardless of location. Our cigar today is by Christian Eiroa who previously gave us Comacho. It’s a great stick at a fantastic price, just what you’d expect from a great maker.
When I first look at the stick it seems a bit rustic. The medium dark brown wrapper is slightly veiny, very oily, and has a toothy or spreckled finish. It punched and lit without problem and produced lots of smoke.
The cigar is well constructed/ It has an open draw and burns cool. The even edge makes an almost white ash. And the ash held well, almost two plus inches.
At first taste I got an earthy or grassy flavor, but this quickly gave way to spice. It got spicy quickly and stayed that way. As the cigar progressed, I wondered if I was going to get anything other than a strong peppery taste, but as I got to the final third I got hints of molasses and perhaps even caramel. I am a fan of creme brulee so a burnt sugar taste is pleasing. This tempered the spice and gave it a nutmeg flavor.
At around $5 per stick this is a great value. If for the price alone ti would be worth buying but the flavor and the construction would justify a higher price. In my book that adds up to value and makes this nice cigar a must buy.
