Azan by Roberto Duran
Most people recognize the name. But, usually not for producing cigars. Different Roberto, different product. However, Roberto Pelayo Duran has experience making cigars like his more famous namesake has in the ring. Azan is a little known old time Cuban brand of cigars that has been in Robertos family for many years and now it is made Nicaragua. The result is a typical hand rolled cigar. Today we look at the White Premium line.
Our cigar certainly looked nice enough when I first inspected it. A silky feeling medium brown cigar it had a tailored or finished look. It punched without a problem and lit easily.
The construction of the cigar was fine. It was an open draw but did not need to be relit. It held a nice tight edge, but the ash fell short, reminiscent of short fill cigars.
Flavor was singular. My notes rarely have a comment that there was ‘not a single hint of spice’, but indeed this was a very mild cigar. I always look for a complexity of flavor in a smoke and this cigar lacked that. At one point I thought it was out, but, sadly, it wasn’t.
Despite it’s lack of flavor, this cigar might appeal to those who like mild or ‘breakfast’ cigars. At around $6 – $8 per stick (it is available in three sizes) this seems a bit overpriced. If you are interested in Azan cigars perhaps you should look for their more aggressively priced Burgundy line.
