Cuban Stock Has a New Chubby VP
Cuban Stock Cigar Company launched an addition to its Chubby line of large ring gauge cigars at the 2014 IPCPR in Las Vegas. The new line is called “Boss” and comes in 3 lofty title sizes – the Chairman (7 X 60), the CEO (6 X 56) and the VP (5.5 X 56). Yanev Levy, the founder of Cuban Stock Cigar Company and probably both its Chairman and CEO, gave me a VP to test.
The Boss series uses a Dominican maduro wrapper around a proprietary quad-ligero blend. The ligero leaves are slower maturing, top of the plant leaves that become dark and oily but strong in flavor. The Boss VP had a pigtail cap and a closed or unfinished foot. The cigar was slightly soft at the foot and firm at the cap. The pre-light aroma was dry leaves. The VP had an average draw with very good smoke volume. The maduro wrapper delivered on the expected sweetness and the early flavor was earthy with hints of oak. The ash was well formed and was a slightly streaked silver/grey. After the middle, the VP got a little stronger and the flavor included burned cedar.
The VP took an hour and 10 minutes to smoke and the strength was medium. The dark appearance was attractive and the construction was very good. I found the VP on-line for about $8.50 (by the box), a little higher than I expected. I rate the VP above average – a 3.5 out of 5.
