Debonaire – Interesting!

Debonaire BelicososDebonaire Ultra Premium Cigars were intimately developed out of the passion to experience the perfect cigar at the hands of Philip S. Zanghi III, founder of Indian Tabac Cigar Company and Daniel Sinclair, founder of Durfort Holdings.  Better known for its rum, this is a new venture into premium cigars.  While the marketing concept of using a popular rum brand to ignite the brand of a new cigar sounds good, it’s yet to be seen whether the synergy will materialize.  Nevertheless, bold initiatives are needed to make giant leaps.

When I took this cigar from the humidor, it looked impressive.  It is a large feeling cigar, despite its not being an overly large stick.  It is firm and veiny, yet, I noticed something funny at the foot.  It appeared that there was a gap or tobacco leaf missing when you look up at the foot of the cigar.  Foot problemFortunately, this didn’t detract from the overall construction, it just looked odd.  The cigar was clipped and lit without problem.  It produced nice, clean smoke.

Perhaps because of the missing leaf the cigar burned quickly.  But, surprisingly, it was not hot.  I also felt that the draw was too open or loose.  Regardless, the stick produced a good, light grey ash that grew to nice length.  Sadly, the burn was uneven and inconsistent.

Flavor tended to be along classic lines.  There was cedar and leather notes throughout, particularly prevalent at the outset.  As the cigar progressed, it became somewhat spicier, but never anything that I would consider more than a mild cigar.  This is definitely a ‘breakfast’ cigar.  While the flavor was fine, it wasn’t particularly complex.

These cigars are billed as ultra premium and the price certainly conveys that image. At over $14. per, these are expensive cigars.  I have paid plenty for some smokes but I demand value for my money.  This colorado stick need more going for it to justify that price.  To be fair, this is not a bad cigar.  It’s just fine.  But at this price point it needs more going for it.  Guys, the idea is great, the packaging good, and the cigar ok.  Work on the flavors and constuction of the cigar and we’ll pay whatever you ask.
