Diamond Crown – A Morning Delight
JC Newman is the oldest cigar manufacturer in the United States. they have been making cigars for a very long time and know how to produce a good cigar. Their cigars are mostly made for them by the Fuentes at the farm in the Dominican Republic using tobacco generally grown there. I haven’t had a Diamond Crown in quite a while and was delighted to give one a try before lunch one day recently.
When first inspecting the cigar it shows a nice light brown wrapper. As it turns out, this wrapper is Dominican grown Connecticut shade that has been fermented repeatedly for a number of years to create a rich taste. The cap of the well made stick punched easily and lit without problem. The draw was smooth and light producing moderate smoke. Before lighting the cigar has a pleasing cedar aroma.
This cigar burned evenly with a nice long light gray ash. At one point I paused to take a phone call and returned a few minutes later to find the cigar still going nicely.
Flavors were mild but not dull. There was never any sharp or bitter taste, only cream and a hint of sweetness. I got light chocolate and thought for a moment of marshmallow, but couldn’t conjure the graham cracker taste to complete my s’more. Seriously, it was a pleasant light bodied “breakfast’ cigar with a creamy rich flavor.
At just shy of $12.00 this is an expensive smoke. While it is certainly not an everyday stick, it’s flavor and construction are an indication of the price. If you know someone who smokes these regularly, find a way to wrangle an invitation to smoke one of his.
