JC Newman’s Pearl of the Sea
Aside from a pretty woman’s neck, the best place to find pearls of the sea is in a bed of oysters. In 2012 JC Newman introduced their Perla del Mar and had them available for the 2013 IPCPR where they gave me one to sample and review. I recently inspected the bottom of my humidor and found the JC Neman Perla biding its time until I selected it.
The Perla I had was the “G” , a 6 ¼ X 54 sporting a band that looks almost like a fancy detective badge. The letter designations for the different cigar sizes apparently follow the oyster grading system by size. The Perla uses and Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper around a blend of Nicaraguan fillers and binder. The Perla was box pressed but with rounded cap and was firm to the touch. The overall appearance was about average, as was the construction.
The cigar had a very easy draw and generated above average smoke volume. The ash was well formed and the strength was on the mild side of medium bodied. The flavor started with nutmeg and coffee but by the middle also included cream. There was a hint of sweetness at times and the aftertaste was mild. It took 1 hour and 10 minutes to smoke this cigar, which I found on line for about $5.10 each when purchased in a pack of 25. This is a decent value for the smoke provided and I rate the Perla del Mar a 4 out of 5.
