La Aurora Let Out the Untamed Lion.
La Aurora has a large number of successful cigars that were launched with traditional or even conservative labels and marketing. With its 2014 launch of “Untamed”, La Aurora is breaking from its past practices by using a contemporary approach. Untamed is also designed by La Aurora to be the most full bodied cigar they have offered to date. The cigar uses a dark Connecticut broadleaf wrapper around a Dominican binder and filler blend of Nicaraguan and 3 separate Dominican tobaccos. They come in 5 sizes ranging from a 5 X 50 robusto to a 7 X 60 gordo. La Aurora gave me a 5.5 X 54 toro at the 2014 IPCPR to review.
The toro was firm at the cap and soft at the foot. The broadleaf wrapper was very dark and slightly oily. The initial flavor is a strong pepper with cedar. About halfway through the flavor profile changed to include coffee and chocolate; hardly any sweetness appeared at any time. The draw was perfect and the smoke volume was very good. However, the toro needed several touchups due to uneven burn .
I took an hour and a half to smoke the toro and it is definitely a full bodied cigar with strong flavors. I have found the Untamed toro for a little under $9 each by the box. This is a little high for this cigar. I rate it a 3.5 out of 5.
