Medina 1959 Lancero A Classic Smoke
Medina 1959 is made by Cuban Crafters in Miami. I have written about this store after a visit a few weeks ago. I mentioned to my guide, Gabe, that I had recently become interested in a cigar shape that has fallen into disfavor over the past years. The current trend toward larger ring gauges has resulted in the Lancero (usually about 6+ inches with a narrow 38 ring) being overlooked. But, although I generally shied away form that shape, I have been very curious.
The Medina 1959 was a great foray into this classic shape. It is an elegant looking cigar with a light wrapper and a pigtail head. I clipped and lit the cigar without problem. The initial draw was easy and open and smoked well throughout.
The first tastes were spicy, more allspice than pepper. After about 15 minutes I was getting creamy coffee notes that made the taste mellow but flavorful. Last night I smoked what I consider to be the best cigar made, a Montecristo no. 2. The creaminess of the Median 1959 lancero was reminiscent of that creaminess. Perhaps because the lancero is made with cuban seed tobacco. Unfortunately, Cuban Crafters does not list its origin information. They do tell us that the tobaccos are aged for the filler and binder. The cigar is rolled at their factory in Miami under the supervision of Cuban exiles with years of experience.
This is an $8.00 cigar. At that price point it is difficult to find lots of value, but this cigar is a nice smoke if you are looking for a classic taste and shape.
As I mentioned, these cigars are made at the shop in Miami. I took this video during my visit.
