Mutineer – A Tradition

MutineerA swashbuckling pirate is an appropriate symbol for this strong rustic smoke.  From the Reyes family, these cigars are made with a tradition for the ages.  Rolando Reyes was a master cigar maker in Cuba for years.  His son grew up in the business and has followed in his fathers footsteps.  Now that Sr. has passed on it is left to Rolando Jr., to carry on the family tradition.

This cigar is a rough looking and tasting cigar, befitting its name Mutineer.  At first glance it looks nice, almost majestic in stature.  These days many people favor the gordo and other large ring cigars, but there is something elegant in the shape of a graceful looking Churchill.  To the touch the cigar is very firmly packed and i was worried about a tight draw.  My cigar was punched and lit without a problem.

Despite the firm pack the draw of my cigar was excellent.  It produced lots of nice smoke and held a tight and even edge.  The ash was light gray and held for quite some time, despite the fact I was smoking as I drove.  Overall, I was impressed with the construction.

The strong flavor of this cigar are not for beginners.  The first third of the cigar was earthy with a fair amount of spicy pepper.  During the second third I felt the pepper dominated and the flavor was one dimensional.  During the final third while the pepper was there there were also dry notes of straw and grass which added some complexity to the taste.  While it is a powerful cigar that I would categorize as a ‘dinner’ stick, it burned cool and din’t have an overwhelming aftertaste.

This cigar was hard to find in the stores.  I did find it in a few online vendors but with pricing information.  Using wholesale prices, it’s hard to guess at the markup that different stores might achieve.  Regardless, it appears that this cigar would be aggressively priced and a good value for those looking for a potent well made cigar.
