Pedro Martin Ruby

Pedro Martin RubySometimes when I go to the humidor I am not interested in something interesting.  I just want a good cigar.  Perhaps I have been trying many new cigars for a while or I am just tired and want to relax without thinking about the smoke, but I don’t always want to be challenged by my cigar.  With that in mind, I reached into the humidor and came out with a Pedro Martin Family Ruby stick.  It was a hot day and I wanted to sit by the pool with a big cigar and read quietly.  The Pedro Martin Family, headed up by Pedro’s daughter Maria, make a great cigar.  And, I figured I would just enjoy.  But, the cigar was too good not to write about.

At 6 x 60, it was an impressive sized stick.  It has a reddish medium brown color and was nice looking.  The cigar was evenly packed and had a nice pleasant pre light aroma.  I punched an lit the cigar without any problems.

This cigar is well made.  The construction features an open draw that burns quite evenly.  I wasn’t paying any attention to the cigar for several periods as I enjoyed a nice book, and it held a tight edge.  It also didn’t drop ash for almost 2 1/2 inches.  At one point I looked at the cigar and was surprised not to be wearing the ash.  Definitely, well made.

Flavors are interesting.  The cigar starts out with a coffee flavor.  It has a nice smoothness to the taste and while not light it’s supple.  A nuttiness became apparent shortly after lighting and continued for the entire cigar.  The coffee flavor gave way to a light spice after the halfway point.  The spice reminded me of nutmeg and allspice; very pleasing flavors with the nuts.  Throughout the cigar there was a sweetness.  It was nice and not cloying.  I think that this would be a medium bodied or ‘lunch’ cigar.

At around $7. per stick this is a good price and there is nice value to the smoke.  I could see this as a special smoke for thsoe who typically smoke something a little smaller.  If you like a more mild cigar this would also be a good stick to transition to a more medium bodied smoke.  I can’t wait to smoke another.
