Punch Rothschild, A Dependable Smoke
In the cigar world today new brands and marks are popping up almost daily. Even for us who review, it’s hard to keep track of all of the new entries into the marketplace. So, it is refreshing to see that there are some old line brands that remain viable today. Punch is just one of those brands. Made in Honduras, Punch has been in the market since 1969. And been delivering dependable value all of that time.
When I first examine my cigar it looks like, well, a cigar. There is nothing fancy with the shape as it is a straight sided cigar or parejo. No fancy wrapper or elaborate band. Just a cigar. I clip the end and light it without a problem despite a nice breeze. The first few puffs taste rich and strong, leather earthy spice.
The cigar is well constructed and burns evenly holding a nice crisp edge. I am able to maintain a long ash of speckled medium gray and black. The cigar remains lit throguht the entire smoke producing a medium amount of nice blue smoke.
This stick is a rich full bodied smoke without much nuance. It starts with an earthy spice and remains consistent throughout. I found very little change in flavor for the entire smoke.
At around $4 this is a reasonably price stick. While everyone agrees that this cigar is too strong for a first time smoker, I think that it is perhaps one of the best valued cigars that represents a full bodied cigar. If someone asked what a cigar tasted like, I think this would be a good benchmark. A neutral full smoke, well made and very well priced.
