Veritas – A Nice Everyday Smoke

Veritas DEA SalomoneI’m pretty sure that sometime early next summer I will reach into a humidor and still find a cigar that I got at the IPCPR show last year.  There were altogether too many cigars. But the benefit is that I have had the pleasure of smoking some great new sticks that I previously didn’t know existed.  Today’s cigar is from the Veritas Cigar Company of Newark, Delaware.  They make three blends, which they call Truth, Aroma, and DEA.  The filler and binder of each of the cigars is the same, but the wrapper is different.  The cigar I smoked was the DEA, which features a Connecticut wrapper.

First impressions were good.  The size that I had is impressive, a Salomone, and difficult to roll.  I am always partial to these ‘special’ shapes because they are rolled by the best rollers with the best tobacco.  While this stick was little soft to the touch, it looked very nice.  It’s light brown wrapper promised a smooth elegant cigar.  The cigar clipped and lit without problem.

The construction of the stick is fine.  It had an open draw and held a tight edge.  The ash, a nice light gray, held up well and grew to about 2 inches.

The taste of the cigar was sort of flat.  It had some spice on a short finish.  The cigar burned cool and I would classify it as a mild or ‘breakfast’ cigar despite the spice in its flavor.  At the outset the flavors were of straw and grass, a light earthy feeling.  As the smoke progressed there were more notes of leather and cedar.  It finished with some light spice.

Without looking at the price, this would be just one more unremarkable stick.  However, if you consider that this cigar retails for around $6 and you must immediately take note.  There is a lot of value here.  You are getting over an hour of a nice smoke with good flavor that burns nicely.  While there are lots of good cigars in this range, few are of the size and shape of this one.  I think this cigar would make a great addition to your humidor and I am hoping to get my hands on their other blends to try.
