A Volcano From Canada – Tierra Volcan Grande
Each ICPR can be a springboard for a new company/brand to enter the US market after already selling outside the US. The Tierra Volcan line, from the Mombacho Company headquartered in Toronto Canada, did so in 2014 with a large booth and a high quality product sampler for interested parties. They spared no expense with this launch and gave me some samples for testing.
Mombacho is a large volcano in Nicaragua and reportedly the volcanic soil imparts unique flavor profiles to the tobaccos grown in the region. The Mombacho operations are based in Granada in Nicaragua, close to the volcano. The Tierra Volcan line is a Nicaraguan puro and the Grande is a 6 ¼ X 54 sporting orange and black in the bands. The cigar was dark, firm with no soft spots and the bands were easily removed. The initial flavor is very sweet with strong pecan notes that eventually morphed into red pepper and coffee. The after taste was mild and nutty and there was not bite or bitterness throughout the cigar. Near the end the pepper mellowed and pecan resurfaced. The smoke volume was creamy and above average in volume. The ash was very well formed with a clean silver/grey color confirming a good construction. I spent an hour smoking this mild bodied cigar and found it quite pleasant. The SRP is $9.95 but I found it online for $7.20. At the lower price point, it is worth a try and I rate it a 4 out of 5.
